Looking for some good vintage chicago blues bands/ guitarists? |
im starting to listen to some blues, and would like some advice on some good chicago blues bands. Something along the lines of John lee hooker and Taj majal. An original vintage blues sound. Here is a list of Chicago blues artists: I've been listening (plus seeing in concert) Ronnie Baker Brooks band, his dad Lonnie Brooks, and Wayne Baker Brooks who plays alone or with Lonnie. All 3 have websites, and all 3 are on myspace. Muddy Waters Some people say that Buddy Guy is the King of Chicago Blues. John Lee Hooker is Detroit blues and Taj Mahal seems almost "delta blues". My answer is similar to the above. Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Howlin Wolf, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, James Cotton, Carey Bell, Lurie Bell, Otis Rush, Magic Sam... micheal bloomfield was my favorite. he played with paul butterfield, and my favorite band of all time, the electric flag. Howlin' Wolf would be a great start because if you listen to him, then you will also begin to understand where the roots of "the British Invasion" of the 60's started. Try the Howlin' Wolf London sessions. Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Electric Flag, and every individual named in the previous answers would also be good to listen to. Try listening to songs, such as Rollin' and Tumblin', Killing Floor, Sittin' on Top of the World as covers by anyone. Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf are my favorite Chicago Blues artists. I also like Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Rogers, Hound dog Taylor, Magic Slim, Paul Butterfield Blues Band. There are some good compilations of Chess Blues recordings which would be a good start to any blues collection.Chess was the premier blues record label in Chicago from the 40's through the 60's. |
