What blues artists have you seen in concert? |
I've seen a few good ones over the past 35 years... Two many to bore you with, because I am a fifty-seven year old Irish, Native American who was listening to my daddy play the blues half the night when he could not sleep. I have seen many of the greats, Buddy Guy, Willie Dixon, BB King, Koko Taylor, and I will throw Delbert McClinton in there, Gatemouth and many others one several occasions. The most exciting experience was meeting Lil' Jimmy Reid in a small venue and watching him coach a young lead guitarist that was going to play with him at a larger Blues Fest the next night. He was a gentleman such as I have never met. He asked me how they sounded together and I was able to remain semi-coherent. I was appalled that some of the young people in the bar did not even realize what a legend was in our midst. I have a soft spot for Saffire and the Uppity Blues Women, and do regret that I never saw Big Mama Thorton live. James Cotton Pat Methany at Dartmouth College; does he count? Most recently Bonnie Raitt and Keb Mo. Also have seen B.B. King twice - Susan Tedeschi, Koko Taylor, Marcia Ball, Kenny Wayne Sheperd, Allman Brothers Band (just after they "parted ways" with Dickey Betts), Doctor John, and many more that I am having trouble remembering (damn - its a PAIN to get old) It's kind of strange that the only ones I ever saw live were mostly made up of white guys, not that black people own the blues. But they invented the blues and will always be that one step better then anyone else could be. I was impressed with Paul butterfields and John Mayall's harmonica playing more than their singing ability. But I am partial to the harp, I was lucky enough to be able to play a bit in the late 60's early 70's with a few bands. We never made much money but went across the country from CA. to Canada and back and that was a great experience. There is a new band that has been out for only a couple of years now who are going to cut their first cd soon and they are gaining in popularity in the bay area where they mostly play and in other North coast citys. It's kind of hard for any band to really make it but I haven't heard anyone that has impressed me like these guys in a few years besides Blues Travelers that is. but Blues travelers are more rock than blues they just happen to have the most talented harmonica player in the world right now. But the other group is more classic blues. They are called the mo fo blues band, if you happen to be around where they are playing or see their new cd give them a listen you will be glad you did. ZZ Top Nobody that you heard of. A couple years ago there was a blues festival here in town with all the local blues artists. I saw that. The Breakbone Blues Band. Blind Melion Chitlyn BB King, Muddy Waters (when he play chicagofest), Jeff Beck, Magic Slim & the Teardrops, Lou Pride, Joe Bonamassa, Jerry Lee & the Groove Machine, Willie Dixon... Saw BB King most recently. Wow. |
