Roy Buchanan (look at his blues stuff, real nasty) bb king Moody Blues, one string louie. I'm going to have to subscribe to this, my buddy loves blues, but is having the same problem. Otis Rush, early Buddy Guy, Magic Sam, Hubert Sumlin, Albert King, J B Hutto, Tinsley Ellis, L'il Ed & the Blues Imperials, Elmore James, to name a few. They were all gritty as opposed to fluid.
B B King, Clapton, Joe Bonamassa and Hendrix are more fluid, but can occasionally sound gritty......and they're all great players!! stevie ray vaughn CeDell Davis may be the most gritty player around, he has to cord the strings with a butter knife because he has polio so he playts with a chunk I've not heard anywhere else really Taj Mahal, John Lee Hooker. Check out the Anthony Gomes Band. He is AMAZING! HERES SOME OF MY FAVORITES:
Mike Bloomfield, Roy Buchanan, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert King, Jimmy Johnson, Duane Allman, BB King, Buddy Guy, T Bone Walker, Kim Simmonds (Savoy Brown), Johnny Winter, Peter Green (early Fleetwood Mac), Bonnie Raitt, Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones & John Mayall), Duke Robillard, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top)

Eric Clapton
Stevie Ray
Duane Allman
and maybe the best of them all (White or Black) Rory Gallagher. ROBERT JOHNSON
The inventor of grit, at least as far as known recordings go, so he's actually older than grit. Anyway he's the man, and he did it all by himself, in a sweaty little room with a mic and a guitar, about 70 years ago. Definitely...
Roy Buchanan is the grittiest blues player I've heard. He's the master of the Telecaster...Some other good gritty ones are:
-SRV, Lonnie Mack, Albert King, Eric Clapton, Billy Gibbons, Alvin Lee, Buddy Guy, Robert Johnson...(there's a few more but that's all I can think of right now).
For the record...Jimmy Vaughan is NOT a gritty blues guitarist. He's more of a rockabilly blues player...and all due respect...he doesn't hold a candle to those mentioned above. early Ike Turner, Peter Green, Jimmy Lane, Lurie Bell, Snowy White, Bob Margolin, Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters, MG Murphy, Buddy Guy, Phil Guy. Albert Collins live!
He played a Tele fitted with a humbucker at the neck, used a capo, never used a pick and played Fender Twins cranked on 10.
An absolutely raw, cutting sound, that would split your skull in half! |
