I need four decent blues songs that talk about the hardships of living in the south (preferably the past). I am supposed to keep the songs centered around this so it is based on a single topic. I really need some help so please post your answers! Thanks Search out at least four blues songs that you believe are meaningful and important in telling us something unique and important about the American experience.
That is part of the assignment. Check out:
1. Black, Brown and White Blues by Big Bill Broonzy. This is a great song that Broonzy performed during the 40's that talks about the inequalities in living conditions that existed for black people in the South at the time.
2. Highwater Everywhere by Charley Patton. This is about the great flood of 1927 in Mississippi. The Mississippi River broke out of its levee system and flooded over 27,000 square miles of land and killing 246 people in 7 states. Patton was from that region and saw the devastation all around him.
3. Gallis Pole by Leadbelly. This song is a plea to a man's family to bring money to save him from being hanged.
4. Hard Time Killing Floor by Skip James. This song talks about the hardships of being black in the South during the Depression. Do a Google search on "Muddy" Waters, Howlin' Wolf, BB King or Robert Johnson. All are from the Mississippi Delta and are Blues singing classics. John Lee Hooker - Hobo Blues
