Can Exposing Kids To Classic Rock, Oldies, Classic Country, Blues,Swing and Jazz Help Turn Today's Kids Off

Gangsta Rap and Hip Hop?

I believe most kids don't get a good mixture of music so it might. My sons friends look at them weird when they sing songs that haven't been play in years, but my sons have a better understanding of all types of music because their dad and me list to all types of music.
I think it sad when I go in my kids school and half of the kids know the lasted rap song, but can't say their ABC or can't read on their grade level. So I say expose the kids to all types of music!

Nope because I grew up listening to oldies and big band era music and I still listen to Rap, Metal, Rock and hard rock.

depends,if you play them genesis for example id expect them to be the biggest rap fan ever

well maybe cuz i listen to all that stuff since i was little and i kinda like some rap but no hard core rap the song has to be good for me to like it but i preferre oldies to new stuff

why? because you dont like it? hip hop as elements from all the genres you mentions.

Not really but it would widen their variety and choice...I started my kids when they were babies and had them listen to everything...now they have a collection that is beyond comprehension..they seem to have everything from classic symphonies to rap...and they listen to it all...what makes it even nicer is if they are ever in the car..there is no arguements about what to listen to.

Nope. But maybe it will give them a rich musical background to draw from.

INCLUDING Rap and Hip Hop

Like others have already said - probably not. It's a cultural/age thing for them, like rock was for me. My parents were classic country listeners - couldn't stand what I listened to. Partly why I listened to rock.

What it will do is give them a greater depth and a greater appreciation of the types of music. My kids still like rap, but they also like indie rock, jazz (can't really get them into the blues yet, but I keep trying) and a lot of the stuff that I listened to back in the day - today's classic rock. I have also come to a grudging appreciation for some of their stuff - Eminem is a troglodyte, but he's a very talented one.

Why turn them off of a musical genre? Because you don't like it? That's not gonna work. By all means expose them to all types of music, but don't expect them to choose "your" music over "their" music. It ain't gonna happen. My daughter's 10 and she's been listening to "my" music for years. She loves a lot of it, but she's also into the more modern stuff too. I listen to it and most of it really isn't all that bad. Not something I'd select for my listening pleasure, but not bad.
