Whats the best guitar tuning to play the blues? |
Whats the best guitar tuning to play the blues? Personally I use open G (DGDGBD bottom to top). standard.. depends. the lower your mood, the lower your tuning standard or if you wanna play slide guitar dropped D or G tuning is good. It depends because while normal tuning is good for standard blues (eg 12 bar.) It tends to be more common and easier to use open tunings for slide guitar. Tunings like open E (EBEG#BE) or open A (EAEAC#E) are most common for slide work To play the blues, there are quite a number and it really depends what style of blues you want to play. A lot of the blues players used standard tunings, but Chicago bluesmen tended to use an open E tuning. (E : B : E : Ab : B : E) The tuning used by many Mississippi blues men was an open G tuning, which strangely enough was also used by a lot of 60s bands, including the Stones, and I think you'll find that Andy Sumner used it a lot in Police hits, certainly in Every Breath You Take and Message in a Bottle, which is what gives the guitar that melodic open ring. The open G tuning is D : G : D : G : B : D. Standard tuning since you already should know the chord fingerings. But if you are going to play bottleneck style, one of the open tunings, either D, E, G, or A. But you are going have to relearn chord fingerings. BB king - check out garry more to - he is really good. On electric picking guitar, I prefer standard tuning, but when I play my dobro or any other guitar with slide, I prefer Drop D tuning! Standard is most flexible. I like E or Em, depending on the song. dadgad dropping D would be nice to play blues, however and easy playing would still be the standard tuning. Pentatonic scales already works well for improvising. Any of them - it all depends on what YOU like to use. Standard tuning is what most people use, because that tends to be where guitars sound their best, but if you are playing slide guitar then an open-chord tuning is probably best. You can play slide on standard tuning too, but its probably better and easier with an "open G", etc., tuning if you are going to play slide guitar. try open "G" Open G i think. People like son house, muddy waters, and buka white use this. Standard tuning is best for blues. Traditional delta 12 bar blues employ the key of Emaj, the melody is played in minor pentatonic, and the chords are E7, A7 and B7. Chords are easy to form and the minor pentatonic scale is easy as well, with the major third for the turnarounds naturally at hand. Learning this basic structure first provides a great foundation for future explorations. |
