Have some friends coming round Saturday who really like blues?

But I really hate that "I woke up this morning" rubbish any alternative suggestions for a playlist!

Jonny Lang - great recommend he's on the list

Johnny Lang and some ribs!!!

dylan, springsteen.....cant go far wrong
or just put virgin radio on, they play some excellent stuff

Try Jeff Healey, he is great and not so much bluesy that make you want to cry. Well sometimes he does..lol

Johnny Cash x

Go for some really old stuff, Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday, Blind Lemon Jefferson, etc. Some of Bessie's double entendes are really funny

try mika he rocks

I absolutly LOVE Etta James. Anything from her is wonderful! Very soulful blues! I would go with her and some Ruth Coleman, Robert Johnson, and you could throw in a little modern Bonnie Rait too. Good luck!

stevie ray von

I'm all for the blues, but have to admit I know more about Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix than any really old blues. Love the Blues Brothers too! (not exactly traditional but awesome!) Best.

cant get blues anymore, maybe you should try some e's.

It kind of depends on what kind of blues they like. If they like the newer SRV ripoffs then go with Johnny Lang and Kenny Wayne Sheppard. If they like real blues then go with Robin Trower, Warren Haynes, Johnny Winter, Freddie King, Albert King, Gary Moore. Really you can't go wrong with that grouping.

savoy brown, eric clapton, allman brothers, sonny terry bronie mcgee, lightning hopkins, leadbelly, canned heat, stevey ray vaugh, john mayal and the bluesbreakers, led zeplin, ten years after, most rock n roll is derived from the blues. you have alot of choices check them out.

Keb Mo, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Bonnie Raitt, Ray Charles, BB king, Eric Clapton, Taj Mahal -- these are all great blues artists

Paul Rodgers
Eric Clapton
Robert Cray
John Mayall
Have all made excellent blues albums
Early.. Led Zeppelin
Also Paul Jones does a blues programme for the BBC which you can play back over the net.
Also try some Mali blues, Tinarawen, Tahtit, etc.
If they like world blues music.
My local library has a good selection of CD.s to borrow, this is another to copy music cheaply.

Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Wilie Dixon were all coming over to my hous ethis week end...but BoB Weir, the loser, interfered in my life...but I keep waiting..

Blow them away with Johnny Winter and Stevie ray Vaughan

Why not ask them what they think? If you ask them to bring some CDs along, but explain you aren't too keen on the 'Woke up this morning' kind....they might just surprise you :). Most Blues fans have a selection of styles in their collection, you never know, you might hear something and go 'Wow!!'

As an aside, I've been Singing and Playing blues for many years, and I don't thing i have ever sung the Line 'I woke up this morning' unless its ironicly of course!!

Theres a Robert Johnson song called Walking Blues that starts with that line, but its not a slow sombre song by any means

You really can't go wrong with anything by John Mayall

Ilove the blues.

This may sound strange but -
Watch the cartoon "Metalacolypse". There is an episode called "bluesklok"

It is supposed to be funny (and it is, its a riot) but any serious blues fans know just how close to the truth it is ;)

Seems to me they need cheering up so play something else.
I once wrote a song called "Dead man's blues" which started;
"Well I didn't wake up this morning!"

"I woke up this afternoon..."

Joe Bonamassa, Walter Trout, Lance Lopez, Snowy White, Ray Gomez, Popa Chubby, Keb Mo, Ronnie Baker Brooks and just about anybody else that featured on 1.FM Blues internet radio, which I listen to all the time (like right now!).

try some taj mahal or robert johnson
