cant get onto youtube at work, but my fav. 12 bar song has always been "red house". jimi hendrix performs it well. you should be able to find it on amazon or itunes or something.

I've looked a bit through YouTube and I found these:

1. A person explaining about the 12 bar and giving some classic examples. A very good video!

2. 12 Bar Jamming. While the 12 bar rhythm is played on the background, the player is having a wild solo on the guitar. Very nice.

3. Here's another variation of a 12 bar blues song. This one is played at a few different styles.

These all are quite different than each other, but it's that feel of swing given by the 12 bars of the melody that makes them all of the same style.

try this on for size and see what happens

*its all one line on the URL*

12 - bar blues is the most common song/harmonic structure and each verse has "12" measures or bars.

Mostly commonly:
| I | I | I | I | IV | IV | I | I | V7 | IV | I | V7 ||

Or - in the key of E major such as Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Pride - n - Joy "

| E | | | | A | | E | | B7 | A | E | B7 ||

There are tons of variations just on the 12-model. Basically - the lyrics of a 12 bar song are in three 4 bar phrases with the first line being four bars, then the second line is a repeat of the first with a slightly different harmonic structure, and the third line is different. Such as Robert Johnson's "Crossroad Blues"

"I went to the Crossroads, fell down on my knees
I went to the Crossroads, fell down on my knees
Asked the lord above for mercy, save poor Bob if you please"

An eight bar pattern is different:
| I | I | IV | IV | I | V7 | I | V7 ||

This pattern I have laid out is for songs like "How Long BLues" or "Key to the Highway" or "Worried Life Blues"

Check out my and my brother's website at www.soundclick.com/silvertown. Listen to Desert Warfare Blues which my brother wrote. It's a slight variation on 12 bar blues. Leave feedback if you can!

Listen to almost anything by Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix or George Thorogood. The bars represent the number of beats in the rhythm. 12 bar blues is a little more complex to play but I prefer it.

go get let it be by the beatles. one after 909 is a 12 bar. for you blue is a 12 bar. nearly every song on a stevie ray vaughn album is a 12 bar in some form.

you know how many bars a blues song has by how manay sections of 4 there are. you can count it like this:

1-2-3-1
1-2-3-2
1-2-3-3
1-2-3-4
1-2-3-5
ect ect

that is how you can keep track by bars by counting if you cant by feel. youll be hard pressed to find a 4 bar blues.
