Playing like John Mayer...?

How do I learn to play like John Mayer? I mean all the fast, bluesy, electric soloing stuff he does, not so much the acoustic. I know he learned a lot of his techniqie by studying players like SRV and Clapton but Mayer's really got his own style that fuses all of that. Are there any particular scales or exercises I need to be learning to master sounding like Mayer?... obviously a lot of practice is required but what else?

Learning to play like John Mayer won't get you nearly as far as learning to play like jayturbry. Steal some of his licks but move on and do your own thing. Nothing more pitiful than a sound-alike or wanna-be guitar player. You're better than that.

'Dave' is correct!!! There are too many wannabes in the world today and the best way to reach your goal and be satisified with the way you play is to find your own way.

Personally, if I walk into a club and am confronted by a SRV-wannabe, I turn around and walk out. If I wanna hear SRV or John Mayer, I'll play their CDs at home and not waste my time on cheap imitations!

It is prefectly OK to listen to John Mayer and steal some of his licks, but ultimately, you will only be judged on your own merits. Open yourself to influence, not imitation!

Master the pentatonic scale.
Then listen to guys like Lonnie Mack - the guy SRV learned his speed from

Roy Buchanan

and then do your own thing.

What sets them apart is the mood and spontaneity of their rifs. They don't just play their memorized scales all the time they craft a melody they create with their ear and elaborate upon it in whatever way they think of. You have to be musically intelligent and creative. So to get better you should try and memorize the feel of every degree of a particular scale and link them together with style and attitude. Mayer also uses a lot of tricks and techniques to produce different sounds, its up to you to discover and learn them.

Take it back to John Mayer's influences. Then learn THEIR influences.

Learn to play like you, and not like John Mayer. Let him become one of your influences.

Learn the blues pentatonic scale keeping mayer's style in mind however, develope your own style and that is how you will progress as a guitar player

The problem isn't that you can't play like John Mayer.

The problem is that you want to.

Try to learn to play like Freddie King.

I am going to suggest something that has really helped me.
This is some really good advice and I hope you take it.
Buy these two books/cd, if you only own two books make it these.
1.Progressive BLUES lead guitar technique. by Peter Gelling. What makes this book cool is that it takes you through all 5 Pentatonic pattens and has a solo for each.
It took me 4 months to master all the solo's. If you don't have all 5 pentatonic patterns memorized it may take you longer.
2. More Blues you can Use. by John Ganapes He has another book called "blues you can use" but I feel this one is better, mainly because each lesson's guitar solo match's the rhythm study. It also come's with great exercises for mastering the scale's and check out the section on Arpeggio's, his approach is a great way to learn and use them . I like John Mayer's singing and song writing, but I think he's a little lacking when it come's to soloing..mainly he needs more practice. So becoming as good as him should not be very hard. Sorry if that sounded like an insult to John. that's just my opion
