http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08oVRtpjQ... Well ... too me, flaring guitar solos from skinny white kids are mostly just musical masturbation.
With that caveat in mind, let me be more detailed.
1) All technically great musicians showing wonderful ability to play the instrument.
2) Eric's solos were fine, but taken a little too closely from Hendrix to fairly judge him as a soloist in this peice.
3) Vai's soloing was a flurry of notes with no real direction. Party tricks to make you go "wow" - I thought he had done better back in the Crossroads film.
4) Satriani showed more sensativity. Of the three, his was less about the flurry of notes and more about the sound of the song. His solo was more like a conversation - like what a decent blues solo should be. Something that takes the song somewhere. Agree with conchobor completely!
Music (Especially Blues!) consists of notes AND spaces between notes. None of these three are bluesmen, which might explain their lack of understanding of this fact. I think it's mainly ego though. |
