If you've got the blues, you're depressed, but why "blues"?

Ther are so many lovely things associated with this colour - Blue sky, blue moon, deep blue sea, the Blue Mountains, blue hair for ladies, etc etc.
Even blues music is not especially sad: I think the tango is sadder.

You turn blue when the oxygen is cut off from you, when you run out of air. When you feel depressed you feel like all of the air has run out around you, like you've become deflated. No air, you become blue.

Please. There were way better answers.. even outside of mine.. backed up by evidence. Report It

did you even read all the answers. Report It

I think because blues songs are often singing about despair, regrets

Because if you got the greens your mummy would make you eat them all up!

yeah i don't get it either maybe the person you came up with the idea had something against the color lol

I guess it just flows out your mouth. Bluuuuuuuuuuuessss

Hmmm.... I'm not sure. Let start saying when your mad you've got the reds!

Isn't the tango an orange soft drink?

Which came first, playin' the blues or havin' the blues?

Well I guess it just kinda fits. Blue waters (tears). Blued music is kinda about depression so....

If any one really cares.

The blues as a music form featuring flatted thirds and sevenths, originates from possibly c.1895 (although officially the first recorded usage is 1912, in W.C. Handy's "Memphis Blues").

Having the blues meaning "depression, low spirits" goes back to 1741, and comes from the adjective blue meaning "low-spirited," dating from c.1385.

In reference to blues music- some blues music is extremely sad.. the older blues mostly. Son House and Skip James, among many others, wrote some downright heartbreaking songs about lovers dying and leaving... and they had powerful, mournful voices- listen to 'Death Letter Blues' or 'Wanna Go Home' by Son House, 'Devil Got My Woman' by Skip James, Howlin' Wolf's ' Goin' Down Slow' or even Leadbelly's 'Goodnight Irene' and you'll understand what I mean. Those are just a few examples.. but trust me the blues had some very sad songs along the way.

well blues are written through experiences whetehr good or bad, nad thos whom can tell the nest story and set body setting rythyms to the words make excellent music. if you have the depression then you are sad blues is about sad things that make you think what you are down about isnt all that bad after all and actually make you feel better and simply except the time as bad experience as others have all through time, your dog died ok somebody elses wife or whole family died or you got a bloody nose ok somebody else got the whole body broken and beaten, it is simply music and words to experienced times they have learned to sing and play about and feel better about the times many learn to except bad times by singing about them and go on with life and others do also, but then thats just a suggestion :)

The colour blue has always been associated with the intellect and contemplation. You are right it is evocative of the sky and water etc. In artistic and religious symbolism it represents the heavens, purifying water, so it is the purer state of emotions and the link between the soul and the spirit.

The music had its origins in the spiritual and religious music of the african slaves and folk music. Though it is not a religious music it's inspiration comes from the same sense of consciousness.
Hence the term Blues.

Most of what they sung was sad. Though strictly speaking, it doesn't have to be woeful, just contemplative and compassionate.

The color blue is often associated as an emotional color. Often depicted as the color for water - water is an 'emotional' element in which one can be taken to the height of crested waves to the depths of swirling eddys.

As for what is the saddest music - the blues is sad. But it is always optimistic, and about healing.

Irish music is REALLY depressing! (gives me the greens, and can break your heart)
