What yeardidR 'n' B start?

what year did rythm and blues start

Some good answers.

With the possible exception of Bluegrass, it is virtually impossible to pinpoint the genesis of any genre of american music.

Jerry Wexler (as stated) coined the term as a replacement for "race records"

With the exception of some of the small black swing bands, what is generally accepted as R & B was seldom heard prior to the end of World War II when economic realities precluded the continued existence of most big bands. The smaller combos made use of what they had, leading to a horn(sax) driven music with shouting vocals that became known as Jump Blues.

In my opinion, Louis Jordan w/ his tympani five is as close to a "father" of R & B as we can get.

Hi Jodie,

No one can pin a year on the birth of R&B. It's roots were too widely spread for anyone to be that accurate. Afterall, it was being played long before newspaper articles and books were written about it.

It began to pick up wide acclaim in the 1930's, yet it is safe to say that it was played at least ten years or more beforehand.

I hope this helps.

I was a DJ for many, many years and a music researcher during college and afterward.

Sure wish I could add to the previous answer, but I can only really add a word or two.

For me, R&B is a wonderful combination of styles. Not quite blues, not quite big band. For example, I would classify Cab Calloway as an early R&B artist, even though he is usually thought of more as swing or big band. You can CLEARLY see R&B artists emerge more strongly after WWII.

It's really hard to pin it down, but as the answerer above states, Cab Calloway was one of the first - Fats Waller was right there also. Louis Jordan, T-Bone Walker, Big Joe Turner and a host of others followed. The term was coined as a musical marketing term in the United States in 1947 by Jerry Wexler at Billboard magazine. Wexler went on to produce records at Atlantic with Ahmet Ertegun (the president of Atlantic) and most notably, Ray Charles.

The term was initially used to identify the rocking style of music that combined the 12 bar blues format and boogie-woogie with a back beat, which later became a fundamental element of rock and roll.

Several musicians recorded both jazz and R&B, such as the swing bands of Jay McShann, Tiny Bradshaw and Johnny Otis. Count Basie had a weekly live rhythm and blues broadcast from Harlem. Bebop icon Tadd Dameron arranged music for Bull Moose Jackson and spent two years as Jackson's pianist after establishing himself in bebop. Most of the R&B studio musicians were jazz musicians, and many of the musicians on Charlie Mingus' breakthrough jazz recordings were R&B veterans. Lionel Hampton's big band of the early 1940s 鈥?which produced the classic recording Flying Home (tenor sax solo by Illinois Jacquet) 鈥?was the breeding ground for many of the bebop legends of the 1950s. Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson was a bebop saxophonist and a blues shouter.

" Rhythm & Blues " Has Been Around for over 100 years &":the term " R "n" B " has been around right before Luther Vandross made the term " R & B " a HouseHold Name.in the late 70's - 80's Before R'n'B It was Soul Music Personally I think Disco grew out of a combination of Pop,Rock,Soul, Jazz, Funk & Blues & all the previous mentioned are forms of " Rhythm & Blues " Anyway that's my opinion. P S " Believe it or Not ", You want to hear some early rap Listen To Johnny Cash - I've Been Everywhere & Marvin Gaye - Trouble Man & don't forget those early mid 70's Bill Cosby Songs like " Yes, Yes, Yes " etc.

I just couldn't let this one get by without putting in my 2垄 worth.

According to my "Blues for Dummies" book, the info goes like this:

Rhythm & Blues and Soul Blues

Perhaps the most modern of all the blues styles we talk about in this chapter of the book, R&B-soul blues combines 1950's rhythm-and-blues styles (such as that of Big Joe Turner, LaVern Baker, and Clyde McPhatter) with mid-1960's Southern soul music (such as that of Ottis Redding, James Carr, and O.V. Wright) to create a distinctive hybrid with a strong blues flavor to it.

Some R&B-soul artists work within a small-combo format, but the majority of R&B-soul performers use a horn section (even if it's a small one) to flesh out their sound, not unlike the lineup of the famous Memphis Horns.

Notable singers and musicians who have played or are playing in the R&B-soul blues style include the following artists (for more information on Bobby "Blue" Bland, see Chapter 5):

Johnny Adams

Kip Anderson

Bobby "Blue" Bland

Otis Clay

Vernon Garrett

Denise LaSalle

Latimore

Little Milton

Bobby Rush

Johnnie Taylor

Artie "Blues Boy" White

Just a few highlights from items listed in the index are:

The Seeds of rhythm and blues were sown by the post-World War II "jump bands". Spearheaded by artists such as Louis Jordan, jump players took the big band jazz style, slimmed it down to a smaller-combo format, and infused it with a heavy beat.

..the "jump blues" style of the 1940's evolved out of the jump band movement.

Big-voiced vocalists were eventually added...the music developed into "rhythm and blues", combining many of the same elements of jump blues but with a stronger emphasis on vocal leads.

...soon it was simply called R&B.

It's mid-60's incarnation added the label "soul music", and from then on, it was called R&B-soul by those in the know. R&B-soul combines the best of soul music, gospel, and the blues into a heady mixture of it's own.
