Composing blues, how do i write a good piano accomp. to a trumpet melody???

ok, i've written 2 sections for my melody, a section which should have an accompaniment, and a solo section, but i'm really struggling, as i'm not a very good composer, but i have to do it.. how can i write a simple accomp. ??

please help me!!

okay, thanks to those who have already answered, but i left this out... i already set my trumpet piece to 12 bar blues pattern i came up with, and have obviously transposed them so i know what key my chords are for the piano, but i have been told to make it more rhythmic i think, not just blocky chords...

Okay - step one - don't panic!

Now, you probably already know the key of the piece, have a look at the melody and see if you can extrapolate what chords the melody is suggesting. When in doubt, look to the most common chord tones appearing in a particualr measure and start with the I IV or V chords - from there you branch out into other chords to suit your taste.

MOST IMPORTANT - regardless of any laws of Music Theory - if it sounds good, it *IS* good!

start with the piano... then slowly introduce the trumpet... have the trumpet blend then the piano fade out... the something where the piano is supporting the trumpet in the end.

The advice below is good, but when your done, check out Berklee School of Music. They have an online program for composing.. I took up composing in the 70's. Don't do now,but I can.. I was writing horn parts etc.
