What is the definition of the blues scale?See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexatonic_s... . Pronunciation: (blOOz), [key]
鈥攏.
1. the blues, (used with a pl. v.) depressed spirits; despondency; melancholy: This rainy spell is giving me the blues.
2. (used with a sing. v.) Jazz.
a. a song, originating with American blacks, that is marked by the frequent occurrence of blue notes, and that takes the basic form, customarily improvised upon in performance, of a 12-bar chorus consisting of a 3-line stanza with the second line repeating the first. It's a variation on the simple pentatonic scale which is used a lot in country and rock.
Take the basic pentatonic and add in the 7th notes. You now have the blues scale.
The blues scale is generally a minor keyed scale which is played over major keyed chords. Most common blues scale:
1 b3 4 b5 5 b7
or, in the key of e (for example):
E G A Bb B D
There are other variations, and OF COURSE blues is not limited to the blues scale! A three chord trick buddy! Here's the way I play it
1st
flattened 3rd
4th
flattened 4th (mainly as a "passing note")
5th
flattened 7th
Although the pentatonic scale sounds blusey I'm not sure whether it is technically a blues scale. Just got to try the notes and see what fits. blues scale is the natural outcome of a note...the overtone
series has natural flat 7,flat 5 next octave and flat 3 in the
next octave this is all going on in 1 note as it decays...
thats why the blues feel so good, it`s happenin` |
