Why are there nearly no female blues artists?

or am i just being ignorant again? to the naked eye you dont see too many female BB King or Ray Charles types around,

im talking of the same quality and style though, so...

Oh, there's a bunch of them. Among the older artists (including some that have departed us), have you never heard of Koko Taylor, Etta James, Marcia Ball, Ruth Brown, Elizabeth Cotton, Bonnie Raitt, Billie Holiday, Alberta Hunter, Big Mama Thornton, Ma Rainey? (OK, I did reach far back in history for one or two of those ;) In the younger crowd I like Shemekia Copland (Johnny's daughter) and Susan Tedeschi.

All of the first blues superstars in the 1920's were women. It was after a few years that they started recording men singing the blues.

Koko Taylor is known here in Chicago as the Queen of the blues.Other current female blues artists include Shemekia Copeland,Deborah Coleman,Rory Block,Marcia Ball,Lou Ann Barton,Angela Strehli(The last two sang in Stevie Ray Vaughan's band),Susan Tedeschi and Joanna Connor.I'm sure there are many more out there,these are just the ones I've personally seen.And Amy Winehouse is by no means a blues singer.
