Stormy Monday?

Hey Y'all, I have a question.

T-Bone Walker first recorded Stormy Monday, but I had heard B.B. King comment once that he was the author of the song, and that everybody does it and it makes him proud and gives him some royalties.

If B.B. Wrote it, he had to be pretty young, after all it was first recorded in the late 40's no?

Martin: I know he was around and writing for others and such.

I can't remember the recording, I don't THINK it was Live at San Quentin, but it was a live version of Stormy Monday. From the sound quality, I would say late 80's onward. Lyrically, it does sound like something B.B. would write, but just as likely T-bone's lyric style as well.

I checked all of my T-Bone records-all credit him. Never heard of anyone else as the author. The B.B. comment is interesting, do you remember where you heard/read it? I have to look into this. He was recording in the late forties, and a D. J. on KDIA in Memphis around the same time.

I've always known that as a T-bone Walker song as well. I know on the album title "Blues" by Eric Clapton he does a cover of it and on the inside sleeve of the album it gives credit to T-bone Walker for it. I would think Clapton would know if it was a B.B. King song considering their collaboration on Ridin' With the King.

T Bone Walker wrote it. My favorite version is The Allman Brothers Live At The Fillmore East version. BB King wrote a lot of blues classics but this isn't one of them.

Definitely written by T-Bone Walker, but it has been covered by just about everyone.

it was Terry Winter who wrote that song in 1925 in Alabama
people think it was T Bone Walker that wrote it because Terry Winter did not Put a copy write on that song because He didn't think it would get any were. so T Bone took the that song because he liked it and put a copy write on his version

T-Bone Walker wrote Stormy Monday, but it became popular after Bobby Blue's rendition. Personally, I think the Allman Bro's did it best.

The Allman Brothers must be given credit for bringing that song to the mainstream, much as SRV brought Elmore James' "Sky Is Crying" to rock radio, doing Albert King's arrangement.

Many songs are pilfered/plundered that way, some not so obviously. Led Zeppelin II is a favorite LP of mine but even at 15 I knew they were stealing songwriting credits. I already had Muddy Waters version of "You Need Lovin'" by Willie Dixon before LZep claimed it as "Whole Lotta Love". Then, they claimed "Bring It On Home" and more. Sad. Others have said Page's raga style White Summer/Black Mountainside is stolen from Scotland's Bert Jansch.

I love getting out my LP of the Allman Brothers live at fillmore east, sitting back, and listening to 22 minutes of whipping post...amazing

I believe that T-Bone Walker wrote the song and then recorded it, for Black and White Records in Los Angeles, in 1947. I've read that B.B. King has said that it inspired him to start playing electric guitar.
Check out youtube for a couple of versions.
Hope this helps

The Original artist for the song "Stormy Monday" was done by The Great Entertainer Little Milton. In the late 40s "Stormy Weather" was done by The Great Lena Horne.
