Can we keep on going about Texas bluesmen?

Everybody mentioned some great names. I forgot to include Johnny Winter, which is unforgiveable since he was the first concert I was allowed to see without parental oversight at age 15. It was in May of 1970 in the old Warehouse in New Orleans, a legendary concert spot in the 70s.

Johnny had his original band of Tommy Shannon on bass and Uncle John Turner on drums. He played two sets, and during each, Edgar would come out and join on keyboards and alto sax. That was the first time I saw Edgar perform his version of "Tobacco Road". He and Johnny also teamed up on Ray Charles' "Tell The Truth". What a night.

He played a Les Paul for his main guitar, then used an electric Fender 12 string for the slide work (the short lived solid body). Blew my mind wide open.

Edgar Winter was born in Beaumont.

Johnny Winter was born in Leland, Mississippi, in the Delta. I used to date a schoolteacher from there and scored points when we met by knowing that. He has a song "Leland Mississippi Blues" where he sings "Y'all know that's where I come from".

A kindred spirit, I love it. I saw Johnny Winter at Filmore East in 1970 at the concert that produced the Allman Brothers Band Live at the Filmore. Elvin Bishop also was on the bill. At the end of Winters' set all three bands jammed until 8am the next morning. Those were the days, eh bro?

oh man you struck a cord in me..

very good

I've still got Johnny Winter's "First Winter" album on vinyl. Awesome musician.

I have to say, I answered SRV as my second choice in the last question ...

I am shamed. Johnny Winter should've had that spot!

Had the pleasure of seeing him back in the 80's

Wow! Johnny Winter! I'm going to see Edgar and Johnny Winter tomorrow night.

You're making me feel old Corrosion, and I hate you for it!
My sister, several of her friends, and I held a carwash to raise the money to see Johnny Winter, J. Geils, and someone else (have to check my ticket stub) for the huge sum of $5.50 at Tempe Stadium, Phoenix in 1975. Those were great times-outdoor concerts were still enjoyable. I stick to clubs these days, with the occasional Blues or Bluegrass festival.

Dantheman-you added some great names. Lightnin' was one of the first bluesmen I listened to. I think most would consider Mance Lipscomb to be a songster though (like Lead Belly) rather than a true blues player.

I don't have much to add about the Johnny Winter commentaries except for some CD recommendations. Try to check out Progressive Blues Experiment. Its GREAT!
Also there is a Mike Bloomfield / Al Kooper Live album that has Winter and Bloomfield jamming to Its My Own Fault. Its called Fillmore East.
Theres also a 30 minute live There Is A Mountain on a double live Allman Brothers album. Instead of Bloomfield this has Winter jamming with Duane Allman and Dickie Betts. Its called Atlanta Pop Festival.

I was just looking at the original question and didn't see Blind Willie Johnson listed anywhere which surprised me. He was born in Marlin, TX and died in Beaumont, TX (my hometown). He was one of the greatest acoustic slide guitarists to records during the 20's and 30's. Beaumont is also where Johnny and Edgar Winter were born. I don't recall seeing Lightnin' Hopkins listed in anybody's answer either. I'm pretty sure he is from either Madisonville, TX or Centerville, TX. There is also the esteemed Mance Lipscomb from Navasota, TX that should be mentioned.

In 1978 at the old Chicago Stadium,Johnny Winter playing with Muddy Waters opened for Eric Clapton. The jam that closed the show was unbelievable. It's good to see that Johnny is well enough to play again.I doubt he'll ever be well enough to tour for any length of time,so if you get the chance - go see him. There are bootlegs of recent shows circulating the internet if you're looking in the right places. He might not have the same fire -but he sure hasn't lost the spark.
