http://www.angelfire.com/music/HarpOn/in... harps are diatonic, basically. diatonic means played within a certain key....other instruments are chromatic,,,one can play in any key on a chromatic instrument..ie a guitar,a piano,a flute and so on,,,,,,to play within the key of F ,one would need a F harp,,,to play in the key of A ,one would need a A harp...
further ,,, on to play blues harp in the key F,one would need a Bflat harp..to play blues in the key of A,,one would need a D harp......and so on......
if you want to learn to blow harp,,, it is one of the few instruments,,that every one thinks that they can master in a short time,,,it is one of the most easiest, and in the same breath, hardest instruments, to play...............
been playing blues flute, and harp for over 36 years..
take care,,,,,, a working musician.
D Hi,
You've chosen a beautiful instrument to pursue. Harp (in the hands of a qualified player) can be an incredibly beautiful instrument one second, and a deamon-like growling roar of thunder the next. With the right mic and amp, you can really conjure the same kind of textures and sonic pallatte as a great rockin' guitar. There is more to harp than most realize.
Playing a "D" harp when a band plays "A" Blues, or playing an "F" harp when a band plays "C" Blues is called "Cross Harp" Generally, you wanna be a fourth (4th) above the band. That gives you the nice combination of the major 3rd and the flatted-7th of the key the band is playing in.
There are chromatic harps. A chromatic harp allows you to sharp or flat any note. If you wanna hear a good example of chromatic harp, listen to "For once in my life" by Stevie Wonder (and yes, that is Stevie Wonder playing that brilliant harp over those complicated changes), or "I guess that's why they call it the blues" but Elton John (and not, that is definitley NOT Elton John playing that pretty Bluesy harp!)
If you intend to play amplified, you want to find a good "Bullet Microphone" this is a mic that literally looks like a bullet. A Sure SM-58 will do, but an old "Bullet Mic" really has the authentic sound you are looking for.
If you really are into Blues Harp, listen to "Sugar Blue" He is one of the true living craftsmen of Blues Harp.

Good Luck!
Kevin Chisholm - American Guitarist I love blues but don't play blues harp. (I play guitar.) The only thing I can tell you is who the best blues harpists are. You probably already know most of them:
Paul Butterfield, Charlie Musselwhite, Little Walter (Jacobs), Norton Buffalo, James Cotton, Magic Dick (J Geils Band), Al Wilson (Canned Heat), John Popper (Blues Traveler), Darrell Mansfield, Big Walter (Horton), Pat Ramsey, Carey Bell, Mark Hummel, James Montgomery, Mojo Buford, Charles Sayles, Billy Boy Arnold, Sugar Blue, William Clark, Jack Bruce, Jimmy Powers, Junior Wells, George "Harmonica" Smith, Johnny Winter
The top jazz harmonicist is definitely Toots Thieleman.
As for the separate blues harp for eack key, thats true. They often wear belts with a slot for eack harp key. Keep in mind that blues or any music is only in certain keys. They probably don't have one for every key. |
