Hank Williams? |
I consider him a blues singer as much as a country singer. no matter what genre he was, he was a great artist I agree :) I can't answer right now. Theres a 'tear in my beer.' He was THE blues man, (for country music) He was country, blues and soul and he was the all time greatest a great country singer thou one i haven't listened to a lot A country singer, through and through. I consider him a country singer who had a great respect for the blues and did some songs that became blues classics. he's one of those "where do you draw the line" cases The greatest singer of all time, in any genre in my opinion. Some of Hanks songs did have a blues feel to them, which he attributed to his friend Rufus Payne (aka tee-tot). But no matter what style of music you want to call him, i just call him the best! All north American music has been influenced by the blues and yes even country . Hank got the blues to so you could consider some of his songs as being blues I believe that Hank's blues roots come from influences by Jimmie Rodgers' recordings of the late 20s and early 30s. Also known as 'The Singing Brakeman' (he worked on the railroads), Rodgers was the bridge from Delta Blues to Country, no doubt. I hope to God you're talking about the father & not the son. The father was the best at his music writing singing & playing. God that cat could really lay down some lyrics, but the son is still hanging on to his old mans coat tails time to let go. "Move It On Over" makes you right! If you want to consider Hank Williams a blues singer, then you have to also consider Woody Guthrie a blues singer.Woody was a folk singer -but didn't many of his songs incorporate blues roots and feeling in them? And what of Johnny Cash?Doesn't The Man In Black have blues feelings in some of his songs - Folsom Prison Blues and Cocaine Blues come to mind right away. Many people think blues is the old call and repeat type stuff old black gospel cotton picking work songs. Hank Williams knew how to tap into what they called 12 bar blues and put a country sound to it. I believe he and Robert johnson are in heaven right now picking and grinning. Hank did a lot of country blues. Today Hank would be considered a "crossover" muscian. Naw. Defintely country. Country evolved out of bluegrass and Irish folk around the same time blues came out of early gospel, field, and folk music. Early country was almost always major pentatonic and blues is minor pent. They are distinct genres in and of themselves that have some cross-over while preserving their own integrity. Hank had the blues and when he sings you can feel his pain. |
