What was the House of The Rising Sun?

This may be a trick question!

Thanks for the smug answer TMV-you're very clever. Now can you go back to the MCR questions?

The house of the rising sun was a juvenile detention center.

It was a house in New Orleans. And let me tell you !! it was the ruin of many a poor boy. and I oughta know I'm one....

Seriously... It was a Knocking shop!!

It was a house of Prostitution.

It was a gambling house with a Brothel, which was burned down by Christian slaves for ruining so many lives.
Look for a book called "For our souls" by Steven Mallinson, as one chapter covers that story...

Martin, I read a piece a couple of years ago that found evidence the song originated in old England and was somehow reborn over in the states or colonies. Note the melody is nowhere near anything what we'd consider a blues standard.

I've been past what is alleged to have been the New Orleans House of the Rising Son, but hey, Storeyville was an entire neighborhood.

I wish I could find the article. It was well researched and raised some interesting questions. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if you were the one who had written it.

Yours,

Corro

house of prostitution

Always heard it was a whore house ...

And earlier folk version of the song it is sung from the perspective of a young woman going off to work there.

An album by the Animals?

It was a House of Ill Repute

It's the Lousiana State Prison @ Angola

A house of ill repute.

It's a house in New Orleans for many poor boys...

I know Ledbelly did a version of "House," so I did a search for a little more information and found more than I ever wanted to know on Wikipedia. Check this link:
