Why is the blues originally associated with personal sadness ? i.e. singing the blues?

Man if I was a slave picking cotton in Mississippi, I'd need some way to release my emotions. Normally one slave would be the leader and sing the call "Lawdy, Lawdy, Lawdy, working my fingers to the bone", to which the other workers would sing back "Lawdy, Lawdy, Lawdy, just wanting to go home". Of course the words are optional. And it would be in rhythym to the cotton pickin, choppin etc.

because the blues was predominantly brought up by african americans that lived in ghettos and they would get together and sing their troubles for anyone that would listen..

Actually it was created while the slaves worked....It stems from long struggles and pain. Singing releases this pain and help them while they worked.

Blues isn't always associated with sadness its about happiness too. its generally is what is reflected in the artist life.

I didn't know that is was! COUNTRY AND WESTERN music has way more "woe is me" songs that any other genre.
