Is slim harpo the real artist of "folsom prison blues"?

I know that his song "shake your hips" that guitar riff has been used for like zz top's "la grange" and that rolling stones covered slim harpo with shake your hips so I know that a lot of blues artist have covered and used his stuff but I need to resolve this cause me and my boyfriend argue he is saying that it's johnny cash's song . Or is it harpo's to begin with?

Bought this and many Slim Harpo albums in the mid 70's. Harpo plays Folsom Prison on this particular one. Guess what it says next to the title on the vinyl? (Cash)
Great version though and of course I like Cash's too!

Sorry to say but your boyfriend is right, this time.

BTW for you Harpo fans it is on the Sonet label the title is "Slim Harpo.....He Knew the Blues" around 1975-78 released

This was originally written by Johnny Cash.

Johnny Cash wrote it.

As far as I know it is Johnny Cash.

Corrosion and/or Martin may know better.

Folsom Prison Blues was written by John R. Cash and the copyright held by House of Cash

Johny Cash wrote it. He might have gotten the melody from Gordon Jenkins who sued Cash for copyright infringement and won a settlement. The song really doesn't much like anything Slim Harpo ever did.

Johnny Cash is the only artist I know of that has recorded "Folsom Prison Blues." If any other version exists, I personally have not heard it.

Slim Harpo doesn't come to mind at all. I don't know but I've always seen the credits go to Johnny Cash. It just doesn't sound like a Slim Harpo song at all.

Conchobor and Martin, speaking of American music, have you heard Steve Earle's abstracted delta blues tune "Red Is The Color" from his "Washington Square Serenade" CD? He even records it in a 1930s sound. Gives me chills.

Sorry, but your boyfrind wins this one :(
Why did you think it was Slim Harpo? Have you heard him cover it? Please edit your question, you have made me very curious.

P.S. Life is so synergistic sometimes. I just realized last night that neither I, nor anyone else mentioned any Louisiana/swamp blues artists in our answers to the recent questions about great blues artists-Slim has always been one of my favorites.

The live album, Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, attributes it to Cash. If Hollywood is to be believed, he wrote the song while in the military oversees, but that could just be the movies taking liberties with the truth (they show him playing a Gibson, when he really played a Martin).
