For example, the steady rhythms of Baroque music have influenced rock. I actually don't think that the rhythms of the Baroque have directly influenced Rock music. There may have been a few rock artists that have drawn inspiration from the Baroque (and Classical, Romantic) but in general...Rock rhythms stem from a fusion of Blues/Jazz and Country. The tonal/harmonic structure of Rock music, however, does come from the Western classical music tradition. I am mainly referring to the tonic/dominant chord relationships.
Wikipedia says it even better: "Rock music has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll and rockabilly, which evolved from blues, country music and other influences. According to All Music Guide, "In its purest form, Rock & Roll has three chords, a strong, insistent back beat, and a catchy melody. Early rock & roll drew from a variety of sources, primarily blues, R&B, and country, but also gospel, traditional pop, jazz, and folk. All of these influences combined in a simple, blues-based song structure that was fast, danceable, and catchy."[1]"
I think that the only portion of rock that regularly draws upon classical music is progressive rock (and in some cases psychedelic rock) ex. Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, Rush, etc.
But generally...i don't think classical music has been a major influence in rock music...it is only indirectly an influence in that it helped to create rag and blues which led to jazz, etc etc...
On the other hand....baroque, classical, and romantic music have influenced and CONTINUE to influence the music of our time...just not in the ROCK genre. There are still living composers creating NEW music but using the same tools that Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin did. Have a listen...

PianOrquestra http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_ct9FEwH... Well what do you mean music of our time: rap, hip hop and stuff like that? Well, the classics are classics they established a standard that everyone should follow or at least consider. Yeah they do have a strong influence except like jazz that breaks free from the standar rythm and uses a sincopa of 2 and 4 strong beats. I guess.... |
