Is sharing piano sheets music online illegal? These sheets are origional and I havn't transcribed them?

Hi, I'm wondering if sharing piano sheet music online is illegal. I'm planning on making a website that lets you download piano sheet music for free, and the sheets will not be transcribed by me.

Yes, it would be a violation. Anything published after Jan. 1, 1923 (US) is still in copyright and providing it for free in any form (original or arranged) is illegal. Likewise, sites that allow people to trade copied music sheets over the internet is probably illegal too.

Any time a person photocopys or converts copyrighted music to any other format for the purpose of avoiding payment or in order to get something of value in return it is a violation of copyright. The websites are probably still up because no one has reported it or pursued litigation. Report It

Probably a copyright violation. I'm assuming you're not posting original works but published sheet music of someone else's compositions. If so, you need to check whether there is a copyright still in effect for the composition. If there is, then you would definitely be in violation unless you first obtained the permission of the copyright holder to post the material.

it shouldn't be as long as you pay royalties....but otherwise it would be as far as I know.
