Composers: how do you feel about the music you have written?

One of the primary reasons i wish to create music is to feel a deep connection with something that I have created - but specifically to feel the same way about music of my own creation as I feel about the music of artists that I admire. Do you perhaps feel this way about your music? If not, how do you feel about it? I'm really interested in what others have to say about this

Good question. My feelings toward one of my pieces differs at various times. Once the writing, scoring and extracting parts is finished it is time to have it read by someone. This is a time of apprehension for me. To parallel "Kucletus" somewhat, are they going to see the beauty in my "offspring" or will they only see the warts (which I know are there!).

If the reading goes well and you actually hear what you think you wrote, then comes a feeling of relief and accomplishment.

Once the music actually gets performed and published there is a feeling of great satisfaction that others are hearing and responding to something that I have created. I enjoy audience comments but it is especially gratifying if the performers enjoy it and enjoy performing it.

Do I have a special feeling about each of my pieces? Yes (just like my children). Are there some things I could have done differently to make them better? Yes, in hindsight. Composing, for me, is a continuing journey toward creating something beautiful, meaningful and most of all enjoyable for the audience. And all the time - trying to get it "right".

Musician, composer, teacher.

Being a song writer and writing my own music, I will tell you that when you write your own songs or you write your own music, you get a deeper connection with other peoples music and also you will feel great especially if your music and song get produced by yourself or another person. It is better if you play the music and sing the song as your own.

I do not feel a deep connection as in such to my own composed music but I use it to express my feelings which help my release tension, anger or any other emotion into my music. This can be considered a deep connection but what I see it as is not a deep connection but a real one, like an extension of ones body. Also, another thing with composing is it only really works when that connection is there. That is what I believe. It's like when in school you had to write a story. You were forced to and that's why it didn't come out as the best as it could. Same thing in music class when you had to compose some music, it wasn't top quality. It is only when you are in the zone and mood. When you have that connection, then you will see your own music as magical and most other people will see the beuty in your music.

Hope I helped

For me, writing music is about creating something new and totally unique. I enjoy taking all of the things about specific composers and pieces that I enjoy and mixing those elements...adding new elements...and creating what i think to be the ideal sound.

I write music to describe my feelings, but after some time I begin to hate my creations because I think are poor and stupid. I'm at the begining in composition and it's a long way to that kind of creation, based on feelings and desire to show everyone how beautiful music is and how I feel about it.

For my music, trying to pick a favorite piece is like asking a parent to choose a favorite child. It's also a strange experience being away from a piece for a long time, coming back and hearing it then realizing "Hey, I wrote that..." I don't always remember writing down every note, but there are weird specifics that I'll remember about the piece (a commercial that was on in the background while writing a section, having a coffee and struggling with this chord, etc.)
