Can classical music stop crime? |
Across the U.S., classical music seems to be a slowly growing as a method to combat crime in urban cities. Just recently I read a article about how the city of Hartford, CT wants to play music in Barnard Park in hopes of getting rid of the drug dealers and hookers who hang out there. What do you think of this idea? Maybe not a bad idea. I know it's much easier to tolerate being on hold if they're playing classical rather than Muzak. I live near Minneapolis, MN, and the city recently started to pipe opera on selected street corners in hopes to bring down crime rates. Well, I don't know how well it's actually worked, but I am sure enjoying it. Being a fan of classical music (especially opera), it's nice to walk down the street with fewer scum bags AND listen to Pavarotti at the same time!!! The person above me is lucky. I wish someone would do that in my town! As to the question if it can stop crime.......It is certainly better than the swill these people normally listen to! You can't fight violence with violins. It is also being used as a deterrent in some UK cities. It has been found that kids congregating in areas such as bus shelters and up to no good move away if there is classical music being played. It may, of course, just move them on somewhere else Can it stop crime? I rather hope so, bu my guess is it can't. Here in the Netherlands, in a small town called "Heerlen" they play classical music for years in the Railway station. Allong with extra guards and police. The station is much more save then it used to be. I don't know if it would stop the crime. But it would probably increase the number of suicides!!!! |
