Saddest piano music?

I need the saddest piano music for an animation.. wether it's classical or modern, any ideas? a particular artist would be better but if you have specific songs that's good too. pls. thanks ^____^

Vangelis has an ablum "Antartica" which is the theme music to a Japanese movie of the same name. A number of sad sombre tunes there.

Christifori's Dream - by David Lanz

Peer Gynt - by Grieg also has some good sombre songs.

Liz Story has some good sad songs too, check out the Wynham Hill 1986 sampler.

Frankly, I think the chello can sound much sadder than a piano.

Remember, you'll need to get permission to use a song, unless you're in a situation where the copyright has expired (and there is the copyright of the work AND the performance to be concerned with).

I can't give you any specific names. But anything that's in a minor key is sure to be sad. Maybe try Bethoveen's 5th Symphony in the key of C minor (the 1st movement is the best). Or try an Etude in A minor.

Solace by Scott Joplin
The Funeral March
Total Eclipse of the Heart
Green Sleeves - minor version
Us and Them
Breathe

Just think in terms of a minor key and you will think of plenty of sad songs. Songs written in minor keys are usually sad. Rock music is often an exception.

If it has to be an instrumental, then "Monday Will Never Be The Same" by Husker Du (from their Zen Arcade album).

Otherwise "Asleep" by The Smiths or "Mistress [piano version]" by Red House Painters.

Too easy. Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven.

Here's a clip from youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6txOvK-m...

Check out some Beethoven Piano Concertos. Ravel's Pavane Pour Une Infante D茅funte is pretty sad...Chopin's Prelude in C Minor is also very drudge-like (unfortunately usurped by Barry Manilow in a gawd-awful pop tune).

Komm Susser Tod by "Arianne" has a very dark sadness to it, from the end of the movie Neon Genesis Evangelion, which caused many people in Japan to commit suicide. So yeah, it's a bit of a sad song. Below is a like to the youtube excerpt from the movie. You can find the Mp3 around, maybe P2P or something. I found some site that had the file hosted and downloaded the mp3 from there a long time ago, but i can't find it now, so the youtube link is the best i can do for you.

I think that the Moonlight Sonata should be the answer to every classical music question. (did you catch that teenie-weenie bit o' sarcasm?)

Seriously though....
Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2, 1st mvt (this is very passionate and extroverted though)
Rachmaninoff Sonata No. 2, 2nd mvt (just gorgeous)
Lachrymosa from Mozart's Requiem (i know ...not piano, but very beautiful and sad)
J.S. Bach - Double Violin Concerto in d, 2nd mvt (sorry its not piano...but also very beautiful)
Faure - Nocturne in Eb minor
There are wonderful selections by Brahms that would be appropriate...I would look into some of his Intermezzi.
If i think of more i will add...

A lot of Ravel's music is very sad, particularly Pavane for a Dead Princess.

Mozart's Piano concerto no. 23 (in A major), second movement (a sad Siciliano), Mozart's Fantasy in d minor, K.V. 397, Beethoven's Moonlight sonata (first movement), Brahms's Intermezzo (op. 118, no. 4), Brahms's Intermezzo (op. 118, no. 6), Bach's Siciliana from Sonata in E flat major for flute and cembalo (I think it was arranged for piano only by Liszt, Busoni and others).

Chopin's Prelude in e minor, Op.28, No.4

Listen to it here:

Pathetique (beethoven) second movement. the tone itself describes it
Traumerei (schumann) - it literally means "dreaming". it's like you are reminiscing the past, possibly the best ones.
Humoresque No.7 (dvorak) - for those who think that this is for the violin, dvorak originally intended this for piano.
Sonata 27 Opus 90 (beethoven) - movement 1. it makes you agitated and at the same time sad.

If you really want SAD and DEPRESSING, check out
Charles-Valentin Alkan's "Song of the Madwoman on the Seashore" for Piano Solo!!!! WOWWWWEEEEE!!!!!!!
- El Chupacabra -

I think the second movement of Beethovene's Sonata Pathetique is very sad.

SHOSTAKOVICH - Piano Concerto No 2 in F Major, Opus 102..Second Movement.

I just finished this one last year, and it nearly puts me in tears everytime I hear it, or play it.

It is hauntingly gorgeous!!!

I am a piano teacher, and I've always thought the this is the saddest piano music ever...Chopin's Prelude 28 路 4.

how about "when you're gone (instrumental piano) by avril lavigne??... it has strong tunes and semi-sad notes...
