Acoustic guitar or classical?? what is the difference?

I saw this really good bargain on a classical guitar. I am learning to play. I was just wondering what was the difference between a Acoustic and classical, because they were both priced the same.

thanx,
zoe (pronounced zoey not zo)

Acoustic guitar's are steel strings where a classical guitar is nylon.

IF you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

The head stocks are different on classical and acoustic guitars. They are different in a way that cuases the strings to go around the tuning pegs in opposite direstions. On a classical guitar the strings go around from the front of the guitar to the back. And on a normal guitar strings go around the tuning pegs from the top of the guitar to the bottom.

I would say they are both identical. The only possible difference is maybe the region, i.e., Northwest states versus Southeastern states?? Not sure about that but both guitars usually cost the same! I prefer the name acoustical between the two names. Classical sounds like the dentist office might be just a little bit involved with that guitar, eh? Vicki Sara

Well, you are certainly getting some strange answers here.

An acoustic guitar may have steel strings or nylon strings ; they are both acoustic guitars.
The classical guitar only has nylon strings. The fingerboard is also wider and perfectly flat..
The steel string guitar has a narrower fingerboard and the fingerboard has a slight convex curvature.

(There are some nylon string classical guitars made with narrower necks and convex fingerboards but this is not the normal configuration)

Zoe.

By definition a classical guitar has nylon stings and has a wider neck and less frets (average 19). Classical guitars are plucked with the fingers of the right hand. Yes, you can use a plectrum but it is not generally accepted by the purists. Styles of playing will generally be Jazz, Flamenco and Classical music. I play rock on my classical guitar just because it sounds really mellow and "thicker" than steel strings.

Steel stringed guitars (un-plugged) are also acoustic guitars and are usually used for folk, blues, rock and a host of other styles of playing.

I am going to make a statement that I will probably be stoned for and that is that playing a classical guitar properly will separate the men from the boys. I am a rocker but it has taken me years to "master" the art of playing a classical guitar. Try Flamenco and its strumming techniques for a real buzz.
