Do you have a favourite musical key to play or write in? |
lately i love the keys of F and G minor. They're all fantastic as it depends on the instrument, piece and the instrumentalist as well as their mood and the mood the composer wanted! Play something on a Bb cornet and transpose the same piece to a flute which is in C and they can be both haunting. Play the same piece on a violin and it can sound just as good. Too many beautiful pieces in so many different keys to specify a 'favourite. A minor, E minor etc - anything in a minor key for melodic if not often sobre mood pieces. Even F major which seems to be the 'purest' other than C Major as well as G Major amongst other majory keys for march music or upbeat pieces. I prefer G and D as I play with string instruments that seem to favour these keys, but I do find A a much brighter sound when required. I write my piano songs in C major or A minor because they are all white keys. I then transpose them into different keys. Db major - it sounds really rich. I think of 'Un Sospiro" by Liszt as being a wonderful example of this richness. D major is my favourite..it's so happy and makes me think of sunshine. many composers equate keys to colours..Madeleine Dring for example Over the years of playing with horn players I tend to find that Bb and Eb major ends up as the democratically chosen key. I've just got used to them. Most definitely D major and B minor. I've no idea why they just make everything sound great to me. Bb Major, G, C, B, and E minor Yes! My favourite key of all times is D minor, because "it's the saddest key" and because of the great Bach harpsichord concerto in D minor that I'm slowly learning to play. I like G minor as well. Don't know why I'm not into major keys, but if I had to pick I'd say A or F#. |
