What Now? I have passed my Grade 8 piano and was wondering what to play next to broaden my repertoire?

I paticulary enjoyed the Ravel Menuet. I preferably want grade 8 standard pieces as I need to perform at this level for my music course. Please help

Congratulations on sticking with the piano this far! I think you have the right idea, and I agree, all we can do now is practice and keep on playing. This is what I'm doing after I passed my Grade 8 piano exam.

Here is a great website to get free sheet music:
http://www.pianostreet.com/search/freesh...
You'll need to sign up, though, but there will be a lot of selections for you to choose from. When you click on a piano piece, it'll even tell you what level it is. So, from here you can look through them and start with something that you like.

I am STILL practicing "Appassionata" (Sonata 8 (Path茅tique) opus 13) by Beethoven since I knew this piece and I really wanted to try it myself. (It is 29 pages); level 8 pieces will be hard and they will last you a long time!

Good luck!

Edit: Oops, my mistake. I meant Sonata 23 (Appassionata) opus 57 not Path茅tique.

Hey Sarah, I Love the Piano But I am Bearly Starting. If you are at grade 8 that means you are really good. I want to learn more but I dont know how to learn and or what literatures to study. Can You please Email me at nel.o@hotmail.com . Id really appreciate it.

Sorry I couldnt answer your question

"Appassionata" and "Pathetique" are 2 different sonatas. The Appassionata sonata is a lot harder than Pathetique, and is in the FRSM (fellowship of the royal schools of music) syllabus. Pathetique is just DipABRSM standard (it's in the syllabus as well). To estimate the difference in standards, DipABRSM is equivalent to the level expected at the end of a 1st-year course at a music conservatory. FRSM is at the end of the 4th year or more. It's crossing into post-graduate standard because the standard Bachelor of Music degree (without Honours) only takes 3 years to complete.

That aside, you may want to try the Chopin waltzes - since you liked Ravel's menuet, you should enjoy them too. Debussy's arabesques are also a good choice. Alternatively, if you feel up to it, you can also start trying DipABRSM standard pieces. Some pieces include the Mozart K311 sonata, Schumann's Arabeske Op.18 (really beautiful piece when played well), the Pathetique sonata by Beethoven, Chopin's variations and Fantaisie Impromptu, Schubert impromptus, the list goes on and on. You'll find it useful to check out the ABRSM website (abrsm.org) as they have syllabuses of all the grades from grade 1 to FRSM.

Good luck and keep playing!

Congrats on passing Level VIII. I have played the piano for about 16 years now. I passed Level X in sophmore year of high school (age 16). I would recommend trying the Moonlight Sonata by LV Beethoven. I don't mean just the first movement as everyone knows the song by, but also the 2nd and 3rd. I love the 3rd . . . played in a Presto tempo. Try playing all three movements. You'll get a kick out of it! Good luck!

A list of really good pieces:

Fantaisie Impromptu, Chopin
Moonlight Sonata, Beethoven
Appassionata, Beethoven
Waldstein, Beethoven
Pathetique, Beethoven
Heroic Polonaise, Chopin
Sonata in A major, Mozart (Easy one, maybe you already did it for 8th)

There are also many mazurkas, Nocturnes (give Nocturne in G major a go! ), sonatas that are really good.

Appassionata - Beethoven

Jeau d'eux - Ravel

Piano Concerto No. 2 - Shostakovich

Piano Concerto No. 1 - Tchaikovsky

Le Tombeau de Couperin - Ravel

Concerto No. 4 - Beethoven

chopin's etude op10 no 4.. that might be a little hard but its nice. An easier one would be chopin's etude no 3, its a warm song..Beethoven's pathetique sonata would be a good try..Debussy's L'isle Joyeuse is lovely too..

Good luck
