Chamber music challenge?

Sorry, that woeful slice of alliteration just came to me on the spur of the moment and I couldn't resist. But seriously...
I'm a fan of classical music, but my knowledge of this one particular area has remained fairly poor. Other than Schubert's 'trout' quintet, Mozart's piano quartet in G minor, Dvorak's piano quintet and the 'American' srting quartet, I haven't really heard much else. I'm particularly interested in exploring Mozart and Haydn, but as usual with those two, it's almost impossible to know where to start. Can anyone make any suggestions? (Please don't say Borodin or I'll be forced to cut out your heart and eat it)

Haydn wrote numerous quartets (16-18 I think)
I've played No. 13 and I really enjoyed it.

here are some of my favorite quartets:

hope these suggestions are what you are looking for.

:D

I would start with Mozart's "Haydn Quartets." This was a series of works that Wolfie wrote and dedicated to his collegue Haydn.

By the very definition of what you asked - these would appear to be the obvious choice.

You might want to sample the Serenades for Winds, No. 10 (K.361) , No. 11 (K. 375) and No. 12 (K. 388) by Mozart.

Musician, composer, teacher.

Shostakovich chamber music, tchaikovsky piano trio music is also very good. Try looking up the Emerson String Quartet or Silk Road Ensemble, they play some really neat stuff!

Malcolm and Bearcat gave great suggestions just let me add Schubert's double cello quintet in C, Death and the Maiden and 2 composers not mentioned at all Mendelssohn's Eb quartet and the Verdi string quartet

In the non-string quartet repertoire, I'll suggest some things:

1) Mozart's wind serenades (particularly the Bb and c minor) -- see K numbers posted in one of the above posts

2) Shostakovich - piano trio #2 (op. 67)

3) Hindemith - septet for winds

4) Haydn - piano trios (I don't know these well enough to recommend a specific one, but all of the ones I've heard have been fantastic!)

5) I can't think of any reason why anyone should listen to Borodin.

Two nice Mozarts are the Kegelstatt Trio for Clarinet, Viola and Piano, and the Mozart Clarinet Quintet (K581) - both very nice chamber music pieces.
