What musical instrument is easy to pick up after learning piano?

I am looking to learn a second instrument. I already have an ABRSM Grade 6 in piano and am taking voice lessons. What instrument would be suitable to learn at this point of time? Preferably instruments of the orchestra, and nothing too big, as i'm rather small-built. Thanks!

hmmm i would think the violin or some type of flute

violin

ugh dont play that stuff play the guitar!!!!!

Either Violin or Viola.

Not too much of a difference.

Once you have the ability to read music and understand basic theory, you should have little difficulty picking up any stringed instrument. That said, with your rating I think you would not have difficult in any instrument family.

I don't know why people think you will be able to play the violin just because you can play the piano. It is chalk and cheese. The bowed string instruments are very difficult but most people find the cello easier then the violin. You will struggle just to produce a pleasant sound on the violin, let alone hit the right note.
Personally , I do not think any musical instruments are easy, even if you can play the piano.

Percussion

No instruments. COMPOSITION! COUNTERPOINT!

flute is definitely very easy to learn. i played piano and i learned to play flute pretty well after only three months....i wouldn't recommend a string instrument...that would take a lot more work. trust me, flute is easy.

Instead of learning another instrument, try to learn to compose and arrange on a PC. You get software which will help you create your own music from scratch. If you can play piano, using MIDI, you can play any instrument through your PC/MIDI Keyboard.

I was going to suggest the organ, the "King of Instruments"; but then I remembered you said that you were "small-built"; and you probably wouldn't be able to reach the foot pedals.

Another candidate, though it is rarely utilized in the orchestra - but nevertheless is a member - is the "Glockenspiel"; or there is the "Marimba" or the "Orchestral Bells".

But if you are as advanced on the piano as you say you are, the above instruments probably wouldn't satisfy you.

Of the string instruments mentioned above, I agree with the responder who suggested the cello. But, then, there's the "Harp"? What do you think?

If you like challenges, consider the following, the most difficult of all orchestral instruments to play:

Oboe(or English Horn); Bassoon - very difficult, double reed; or, supposedly the most intimidating of all, the "French Horn".

Take your pick.

Happy learning,

Wotan
