How do you hit low notes on a bari sax? |
Do you have any tips? I am a beginner player and i can't hit anything below middle G. I had this same problem wit alto sax. First you need to get it checked out. Make sure its working right. Because we are clarinet players we have what I like to call, kinda like a rubber band embrasure (really tight) because the mouthpiece is smaller than on saxophone. Take a pair of socks, roll them up into a ball, and put it in the bell of the sax. Not too far down though because then you won't be able to play some of the notes. What this does is it makes you fill the horn up with more air; more than likely the air you need to play Bari. Keep working on it. The more you do it, the easier it will get and the notes past G4 (the G above middle C). Don't worry. Also you may wanna start off with a 2 or 2 1/2 reed if you're not already. Get a teacher, get a teacher, get a teacher. The teacher can make sure the saxophone is in complete working order, and that anything we tell you is the right thing. After all, we could recommend things like dropping your jaw, changing reed strength, changing mouthpieces, or any number of things, but these are all probably wrong as we can't see you play. Get a teacher and this way you only learn good habits, not bad ones. I'm not a saxophonist, but I can play the sax. Low notes are hard. Can you hit those low notes on alto? (I wouldn't recommend starting sax on bari!) I've found that starting with notes you can play, and slurring down to lower ones often helps. Start on middle-finger C, blow air through the horn and play a descending scale all on one breath. Keep your jaw relaxed. Can you get any lower that way? to hit low notes drop your jaw. It will help with your tonality. Also make sure that you are playing the f correctly. It also could be the sax. |
