Basically though,
Whole Note - A whole note gets 4 beats. It looks like an open oval note.
Half Note- A half note gets 2 beats. It looks like a whole note with a stem/stick at its side.
Quarter Note - A quarter note gets 1 beat. It looks like a shaded-in oval with a stem/stick attached.
Eighth Note - An eight note gets 1/2 a beat. It looks like a quarter note with a twist at the end of its stem.
Sixteenth Note - A sixteenth note gets 1/4 of a beat. It looks like an eighth note, except with an extra 'flag' attached to its stem. I think you will find that a "half" note, is a note that is a "sharp" - raised a "half" step, or "flat", a note that has been lowered a "half" step.
