What can you tell me about the form of Beethoven's 3rd movement of Piano Sonata No. 1?

This is Op. 2, No. 1 in F minor. The third movement is Menuetto, Allegretto. What is the overall form of the piece? Is there anything special about this piece that makes it different from normal sonata form?

If it's a minuet, then it's not likely to be in sonata form. I wouldn't expect a second-to-last movement of a sonata to be in sonata form. First movement, yes. Last movement, quite possibly. Other movements, not nearly as likely.

Without looking at the score, I'll tell you that the OVERALL form is probably ternary. Usually, a minuet is paired with a trio. Minuet played first, trio played second, and then Minuet repeated. A-B-A.

Look for the minuet to be, in itself, a type of binary form. And look for the trio to be a type of binary form also.

This sonata was written in 1796 and dedicated to Joseph Haydn.
The third movement, a minuet in F minor, is conventional in form. It contains two repeated sections, followed by a trio in F major in two repeated sections, after which the first minuet returns.
Well, Beethoven with all of his might often seemed to break classical traditions :)

The second movement is played, then the third, then the second, then the fourth. I think the second and third are just supposed to lead into the fourth movement. They aren't actual songs, and they have to be played with the whole sonata. Beethoven might not have had much in mind when he wrote the third movement.
