Why is the 1812 Overture used as a theme for France on TV, cartoons etc.?

When it's about France getting defeated in Russia?

The French have a very selective memory when it comes to history.

Vichy Government and Nazi Germany ????????

Cheese eating surrender monkeys.

Because France was defeated by Russia in 1812. Tchaikovsky, being Russian, seemed very proud of this, hence this magnificant overture.

I think that you are terribly mistaken. The French National Anthem, "La Marseillaise", is utilized throughout the "1812 Overture", in opposition to that of Czarist Russia. The Russian anthem is used to conclude the overture. Listen to it on You Tube.

It - the "la Marseillaise" - is in march rhythm, and this is most likely what you are hearing on French TV.

Wotan

well,to be fair it is a hell of a tune.
and the person who said the french anthem is quoted throughout is dead right, maybe because that's another nice tune.
when french people get off the eurostar at waterloo i wonder what they think !
