i need help for my music class. If you want a DEFINITION of chamber music....Wikipedia defines chamber music as "a form of classical music, written for a small group of instruments which traditionally could be accommodated in a palace chamber. Most broadly, it includes any "art music" that is performed by a small number of performers with one performer to a part. " For more info see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamber_mus...
If you want to know how to describe chamber music that you are listening to...then you first need to determine the instrumentation of the piece (how many players/list the various instruments). Then you should determine what style and time period the music was written.
From this point on.....it is difficult to tell you what to do because I would need to know whether you want to describe it theoretically or if you simply need to describe the piece's mood (which can be done the same way for any piece of music....not just chamber).
If you want to describe it in theoretical terms....you would need to know how to analyze a piece's harmony, melody, rhythm, etc...I guess I can simply tell you that for a basic analysis you can describe how you think the instruments are working together (the textures and overall sounds they create)...does the music sound "happy"? "sad"? Is it fast or slow? Do the instruments sound like they are working together to make "chords", or is one instrument sticking out in your mind as taking on a more solo role? You can try to figure out who is playing the melody at various times...is it a violin? a cello?...etc etc....there is so much more that can be said...I need more details from you to go further.... Well you have to listen to it, it really has no difference between this and trios and duos. Pieces are arranged to be full of perfect 3rds and 5ths to allow a pleasant sound, in reality piano compliments to solos are but a form of chamber music. Music to play, not necessarily to be listened to.
Most was written for the musicians, not necessary an audience. Music written for a small amount of people meant to be played in a chamber or a room. Not a concert hall with an orchestra. |
