Besides the masters Paco de Lucia and Camar贸n de la Isla? I am trying to expand my collection. All flamenco guitarists and singers perform por bulerias. So you have a lot to choose from.
I've studied flamenco guitar for ten years, so my comments will focus on guitarists. In addition, my study has mostly modern flamenco guitar, but that in no way implies that modern flamenco is "better" than more traditional music.
Here are some guitarists that I would recommed to you, and not just for bulerias:
Tomatito -- Paco is a "god," but in bulerias Tomatito does it for me.
Vicente Amigo -- fantastic musicianship and technique.
Pepe Habichuela -- great music.
Chicuelo -- in my (very) humble opinion, not the best in bulerias, but a terrific guitarist and accompanist.
Manolo Sanlucar -- the bulerias on his Tauromagia album is first-rate. Well, the whole album is first-rate. He is first-rate.
Paco del Gastor -- his main album has a great buleria, played in a traditional style.
Moraito -- a great guitarist playing in the Jerez style. He has the great gift of sounding both modern and traditional. Absolutely one of my favorites.
Gerardo Nunez -- a wizard on the guitar. Most of his pieces are very modern, but he is first-rate in every way. I have his instructional video, and he's a terrific teacher.
I could go on, but there are too many to mention. I mean, these people, all of them, are terrific. So you have a lot to listen to.
Suggestion: the best source for flamenco music is www.flamencoconnection.com Dance, song, guitar, it's all there. CD, DVD, instructional, other products, it's all there. I have no relationship to them except as a satisfied customer. If you want to add to your collection, that's the place. Over the phone, I have also found them to be very helpful.
By the way, Al Dimeola is a great guitarist, but he is not a flamenco guitarist.
Best wishes. Al Di Meola. He plays and records with Paco sometime. |
