In Suzuki book three for violin there is a gavotte by "P. Martini", but I can't find him in any reference source. Does anyone know his first name, when he lived, etc.? Martini, Giovanni Battista (or Giambattista, known as Padre Martine) b. Bologna 4/24/1706; d 8/03/1774; Italian priest, theorist, teacher and composer. Received a thorough education from his father and others in violin, harpsichord, sining and composition. Entered the Franciscan order in 1721 and was appointed Maestro di cappellla at San Francesco in Bologna in 1725, after which he left his home town. As the most famous theorist and teacher of his time he attracted many distinguished pupils, including Mozart, and corresponded with musicians throughout Europe. His most important works are the unfinished history of music (three vols 1757-81) and a treatise on counterpoint, 1773-75.
