Is it possible to repair a crack in the cello? |
I have quite a big crack down the back of my cello probably due to humidity. Is it possible to repair it and will the sound quality worsen after repair? If it is not possible, then what are the options? take it to a professional, they will be able to fix it. Ask fellow musicians in your area for references, and ask the repair personell about the sound quality before letting them fix it. DO NOT try to do it yourself.... find a professional luthier in your area and take it to them. It most likely won't be cheap but thats your only option if you want it fixed. Yes, it's possible to fix just about anything. As one respondent mentioned, you'll need the assistance of a luthier. No you can't repair it yourself.. If the crack is near where the soundpost is then your cello is basically kapputt because it really messes up the resonance forever. So look and hope that it's not a rip or a soundpost crack because both of those suck but especially the soundpost crack... If it's a soundpost crack it can be fixed and the cello could sound ok after but those repairs have a tendency to open back up due to the stress on that part of the instrument. Some luthiers might give you some money for you cello and you can take that money and look around for another cello.... one time when I was 6 or so my cello got a crack on the back but it wasn't so bad.. I got to keep my cello but my parents also bought another one which I liked much better. I used my other one to play with and made a boat out of it in the pond in our back yard and obviously that ruined it.. but it was an option and I liked it.. Anyways.. it depends on the severity of the crack .... Yes, you would be amazed at what a good luthier can fix but do not attempt to do it yourself or let the next door neighbour/father/brother "have a go" either. |
