This question if for shoulder, string instrument players that play the viola or violin. There are three type of vibrato : finger, wrist and arm.
The wrist vibrato should be learnt first as it is the most useful.
Remember, vibrato is flat then natural, flat then natural...it is NEVER sharp so do not go above the note. The hand falls back then returns to the note, Start off slow and work up to a decent speed until it sounds nice.
It is quite difficult for most people at first. Here is a site that helped me a lot :

watching these videos was a huge help. I always struggled to get my vibrato going but it is now a "work in progress"...not great, but getting there.
The major point that help me was to keep a small gap between the first finger and the neck of the violin. They make this quite clear on the video.
PS. I did not bother with the orange ; once I had the movement correct in the third position then I just moved to the first position. Just experiment by rocking your fingers on the fingerboard while depressing a string.
