Were Laurel & Hardy and Charlie Chaplin 100 years ahead of their cinematic time-would they be as funny 2day?

I think the films of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Roscoe Arbuckle, Harry Langdon, Charley Chase, Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Max Linder, Thelma Todd, Patsy Kelly and others weren't so much ahead of their time...I think that their comedy was so universal and so well crafted that it's still funny and still relevant today. They were lucky enough to be some of the first actors to preserve it on film.

These men and women took comedy and turned it into an art form. Many comedians of today are influenced by them or have been influenced by people who were influenced by them. So, in a way, their comedy is still funny today and still lives on.

Isn't Rowan Atkinson's Mr. Bean just Chaplin in modern clothes? Watch the interplay between Steve Carell and Rainn Wilson on 'The Office', and those painful looks into the camera by John Krasinski? That's all Laurel and Hardy. '30 Rock' has The Marx Brothers written all over it...weird sight gags, clever one-liners and insults, the breakneck pace...that's what made the Marx Brothers funny and it's what won '30 Rock' the Emmy.

i think so..its classic slapstick comedy, comedy today is mostly making fun of someone..

wtf does that video have to do with Laurel & Hardy or Charlie Chaplin? And yes they still are funny.

Definitely.
Laurel and Hardy set the comic standard, both for pathos and for slapstick. Their timing, their lines, their musical numbers, all fantastically played.
Chaplin, again, was a master of timing and pathos, and his writing was savagely witty.
The one thing that dates these two acts is that their humour and image is very much of its time.
That said, the type of comedy they stand for, and helped to set standards for decades, and hopefully centuries.

Them and the Marx Brothers.

I doubt it, the type of humor they shared was with low income people making fun of the rich.
Circumstances still could occur but people are less tolerant than in the 30's.
Today's population is more self centered and willing to sue.

Nope - Comedy has progressed too far for them to be as hilarious as they were then to be relevant now. Back then it was all slapstick - way too violent for todays media. You have to address the ills of the world and make people feel better about them. Kind of like a fat person telling a fat joke. You get it, and laugh - but a skinny person saying the same joke - Not so funny.

yes & yes, and don't forget harold lloyd & buster keaton

Since their movies have not been around for 100 years, the question can not have an answer. Check back in 2027!

physical and social comedy is always hard. they would have done well today. they would have done things different but if they had the same background it would still be as good. the best things about these comediens is that they were talented in more than comedy. chaplin could actually dance and entertain. having started in a bijou or another type of cabarate. they could and did more than just comedy they entertained. another group that would have done well would be abbot and costello even now if you watch some of their skits, not just their movies, you would laugh and enjoy yourself. dick van dyke. he was a dancer, singer and comedian. mary tyler moore was another. she was a dancer and singer as well as a comedien. lucy ball also an entertainer not just a comedien. carol burnette another good example. it was more that they could capture a sense not just grab a laugh. many comediens today do that. but more do not. john leguezamo ( I think I misspelled his name) is one I recently saw a special of his. he did more than made you laugh. he nearly took you into his life and showed you how it was so similar to yours. with his family. kevin bacon. think about something. when you see arnold you see arnold as the terminator. arnold as conan or whatever he is playing. think about kevin for a second you never think it is kevin bacon as something. you always see his character, not him first as a character. you see the prosecuting officer played by kevin bacon. not kevin bacon as the prosecuting officer. when you watch tom cruise in the same movie you see tom cruise as the defending officer. not the defending officer played by tome cruise. in that same movie jack nicolas is another who is an entertainer more than an actor. think on his films yes you see him but usually you see him get swallowed by his character. you beleive he is the character that just looks like jack. did you know he can sing as well? and has he did in tommy, I beleive he did in the little shop of horrors as well. the original not the remake.
