Why do the characters in The Simpsons never get any older?

How old do you reckon they would be nowadays?would Grandpa Simpson be dead?what number snowball do you reckon they would be on?

they are cartoons. simple as that.

they just dont.

the people in the catoons are too lazy to be bothered by aging them everynow and again - they cant even be bothered to make them breathe ! - lol

Cartoon characters rarely age, only in dream sequences. There are comic strips where they do (For Better or Worse, for one) and time does pass. Although Hanna Barbara aged Pebbles and Bam Bam to adulthood so Fred, Wilma, Barney and Betty must have aged (although they did not look it).

The Simpsons, who knows how old grandpa was to start with so he might still be around and snowball, maybe #3, cats can live 15 years.

Just my guess. Just enjoy it.

This may come as a bit of a shock but they are cartoon characters.

They do sometimes look into the future, as in 'Lisa's Wedding' but these are rarities.
Perhaps this was a decision made by the staff - they weren't expecting the show to go on for as long as it has done, also ageing the characters would create some animation problems and as we know fans tend not to like change.

Sometimes they do. Like the episode when Lisa sees that weird fortune teller that tells her about her first love. But I suppose that don't really count as they haven't actually grown up. their just telling the future. It probably is that they aren't real. Oh and that its like poetic license, Matt groening doesn't have to make them seem real. They just do.
