Lady
Rueben James
You dedicated my life Lucille
In a bar in toledo across from the depot
On a barstool she took off her ring
I thought I鈥檇 get closer
So I walked on over
I sat down and asked her name
When the drink finally hit her
She said I鈥檓 no quitter
But I finally quit living on dreams
I鈥檓 hungry for laughter
And here ever after
I鈥檓 after whatever the other life brings
In the mirror I saw him
I closely watch him
I thought how he looked out of place
He came to the woman
Who sat their beside me
He had a strange look on his face
The big hands are callous
He looked like a mountain
For a minute I thought I was dead
But he started shaking
His big heart was breaking
He turned to the woman and said
You picked the fine time to leave me, lucille
Four hungry children and a crop in the field
I鈥檝e had some bad time
Live thru鈥?some sad times
But this time your hurtin wouldn鈥檛 heal
After he left us, I ordered more whiskey
I thought how he made him look small
From lights of the bar room to a rented hotel room
We walked without talking at all
She was a beauty, but when she came to me
She must have thought I lost my mind
I couldn鈥檛 hold her, the words that he told her
Kept coming back time after time.
You picked the fine time to leave me, lucille
Four hungry children and a crop in the field
I鈥檝e had some bad time
Live thru鈥?some sad times
But this time your hurtin wouldn鈥檛 heal
You picked the fine time to leave me, lucille
Four hungry children and a crop in the field
I鈥檝e had some bad time
Live thru鈥?some sad times
But this time your hurtin wouldn鈥檛 heal Just Dropped In (To See What My Condition My Condition Was In). can't name just one!! So a top 3...
1. The Gambler
2. Coward of the County
3. Islands in the Stream (with Dolly Parton) The Gambler Always has been and always will be The Coward of the County. I do also like The Last Ten Years-The Superman Song though. mine is an old one when he had a band called ( The first edition ) a snappy little tune called Just dropped in. A mid sixty,s tune. I am listening to it now actually. coward of the county
can't unlove you by me a rose is one of the top 5 best songs Coward of the County
But I can't leave out The Gambler Twenty Years Ago. Daytime Friends or Nighttime Lovers, whatever it's called. Lucille by far! You Decorated My Life.
Lady, Morning Desire and Daytime Friends are at the top of the list as well.
A funny thing about Daytime Friends. I knew a girl in school who used to sing that song. This was 1986 when the song was either on the charts or pretty fresh off them, and I now live in another town. Well, as fate would have it, I ran into her at the mall one day not too long ago, and she lives in the same town I moved to! I wasn't quite sure it was her until I realized she was humming DAYTIME FRIENDS. Twenty years later, it's still her favorite song of all time. I went over and said hello. "The Greatest" -The song about the little boy playing baseball. I think my favorite is... The Gambler and Cowerd of the County.. those are my two favorites. Personal favorites are "Ruby" and " Love will Turn You Around" She believes in me!..I'll never know just what she sees in me...and who knows maybe on some special night...if my song is right...i'll find a way...to find a way...while she lays...while she waits....for me I have two!!! "Mary do you know?" a duet with Wynonna, even if it is a Christmas song and "Just Dropped in to see what condition my condition is in." Most people don't know these songs, but they're the best!!!!! "Through the years", this song makes me cry! Islands in the Stream "Harbor for My Soul".. from the album, "The Ballad of Calico"... written by Micheal Martin Murphey |
