The song Starts with goodbye by carrie underwood ,what does it mean?

the lyrics.

"Starts With Goodbye"

I was sitting on my doorstep,
I hung up the phone and it fell out of my hand,
But I knew I had to do it,
And he wouldn't understand,
So hard to see myself without him,
I felt a piece of my heart break,
But when you're standing at a crossroad,
There's a choice you gotta make.

[Chorus:]
I guess it's gonna have to hurt,
I guess I'm gonna have to cry,
And let go of some things I've loved,
To get to the other side,
I guess it's gonna break me down,
Like falling when you try to fly,
It's sad, but sometimes moving on with the rest of your life,
Starts with goodbye.

I know there's a blue horizon,
Somewhere up ahead, just waiting for me,
Getting there means leaving things behind,
Sometimes life's so bitter sweet.

[Chorus:]
I guess it's gonna have to hurt,
I guess I'm gonna have to cry,
And let go of some things I've loved,
To get to the other side,
I guess it's gonna break me down,
Like falling when you try to fly,
It's sad, but sometimes moving on with the rest of your life,
Starts with goodbye.

Time, time heals,
The wounds that you feel,
Somehow, right now.

[Chorus:]
I guess it's gonna have to hurt,
I guess I'm gonna have to cry,
And let go of some things I've loved,
To get to the other side,
I guess it's gonna break me down,
Like falling when you try to fly,
It's sad, but sometimes moving on with the rest of your life,
Starts with goodbye,
I guess I'm gonna have to cry,
And let go of some things I've loved,
To get to the other side,
Starts with goodbye,
The only way you try to find,
Moving on with the rest of your life,
Starts with goodbye,
Na na na na na na na.

My take?
She was in a bad relationship or one that wasn't going anywhere. She had to move on. Yes it is hard. Yes you fall. But, you get up and try again. You learn from it and move on.

I love this song! Don't care for too many of her songs that make radio. The others are much better in my opinion. Maybe it's because the radio plays get worn out and old.

This was written by Nashville songwriters Hillary Lindsey and Angelo Petraglia. Lindsey also co-wrote Underwood's hit "Jesus, Take The Wheel." Angelo had a #1 Country hit for Trisha Yearwood with "Believe Me Baby (I Lied)."

Hope I helped!!!

its supposed to be about her moving to a new place by herself.

listening to it right now! LOVE that song! I think its saying that the choices you make in life might hurt you but you goptta do whats right. She is using the example of leaving all her friends and family to move somewhere else to start her singing career knowing that she is gonna be really sad and its gonna be hard for her to see herself w/o them and she mite cry but its the right decision even though he wouldn't understand. She is also saying that there theres "blue horizon somewhere upahead waiting for me but getting there means leaving things behind sometimes lifes so bittersweet" and that means that she has to do this even though it is really sad at the time and in the future something good will happen b/c of that decision. (like getting a the best country singer award!!) hope this helps!
