She is the daughter of Englishwoman Judith Ann (n茅e Hawkins), a Liverpudlian, and African-American Jerome Jesse Berry. Berry's maternal grandmother, Nellie Dicken, was born in Sawley, Derbyshire, England, while her maternal grandfather, Earl Ellsworth Hawkins (an American), was born in Ohio. Berry's parents divorced when she was 4 years old and she was subsequently raised by her mother, a psychiatric nurse. Her father was an orderly in the same psychiatric ward where her mother worked and later became a bus driver. Berry has an older sister, Heidi, who was born two years before her, and an older half-sister, Renee (from a different mother).

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Jerome Jessie Berry, father of Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry, died Friday at a nursing home, where he was receiving care for Parkinson's disease. He was 68.

Berry, an Air Force veteran, had been a bus driver for the Bluebird travel lines. He was a porter at a Cleveland psychiatric hospital when he met Halle Berry's mother, Judith, who was a nurse. They later divorced.
