why did they break up ?

The tension was growing between the band members. I believe that John wanted Yoko to have a say in the music. I believe Paul was taking too much of a leadership role. I believe their was an issue of their label Apple records losing money. They were growing apart and couldn't resolve their personal issues with each other.

The short answer is that they just couldn't get along with each other anymore. Particularly John and Paul.

Because their fans apparently couldnt find them in the rock section where this question belongs, so they decided to split up.

It's was all Yoko's fault. She convinced John that he could make great music (which he did) without Paul.

Drugs. They caused everyone to think they had conflicts with each other, but in reality, their brains were so clouded that the conflicts were pretty petty. Except for one, and that was Yoko telling John he could do better on his own. That was a serious problem, but it was the drugs that helped convince him she was right.

Seriously, though, you can trace the break-up of just about any group I can think of back to drugs. The only one i can think of that would be an exception would be the Bangles -- they broke up because of Susanna's ego.

Just like any other band there were creative differences. Yoko was making John believe that he did not need the band anymore. George had already done a solo album because he was not being allowed to record the songs he was writing. By the time they were recording their last album they were not even recording together. There was a lot of anger between John and Paul. Listen to a song that John wrote after the breakup called "how do you sleep at night." It just screams that John did not see the worth of Paul's songs. Most people say yoko but I think that she was just the catalyist that put the final nail in the coffin. The simplest answer would be egos.

Because Johnny Cash and Willie made a better combo. Wrong section my friend.

I believe it had something to do with making solo records like how could they make a solo recording if they were still together as a band. Being a band how could they call it a solo.
