He won a Rhodes Scholorship to study English Literature at Oxford University before becoming an US Army Captain. During this period he became a qualified helicopter pilot but left the army just as he was about to become an instructor at West Point. He continued piloting helicopters until he was found passed out at the controls of his machine. He then started to clean studios in Nashville until Johnny Cash recorded his song "Sunday Morning Coming Down".
He was once married to Rita Coolidge but this marriage failed when he began drinking one and a half bottles of Jack Daniels a day.
He finally saw the light and gave up drinking in 1976.
