What does "no plugs" refer to in the song by the Statler brothers?

If the "no plugs" is associated with old time aviator caps, I'd imagine their referring to the lack of "ear plugs" (for radio communication) that were used in later aviation helmets.

If "no plugs" were taken out of context, I'd guess that they were referring to the limited amount of commercials that were the norm on TV/radio in the 50's - limited, that is, compared to today's barrage of media advertising.

INTERESTING..I DID'NT KNOW THAT.
