Is it a coincidence that Sylar shares a last name with a famous immortal?

In the TV show Heroes Sylar's real name is Gabriel Gray. His last name is the same as Dorian Gray in Oscar Wilde's the picture of Dorian Gray. In which Dorian is a heartless and amoral character who takes his pleasures from others with no remorse or care. He is also immortal due to a wish he made as a young man that a picture would age instead of himself. That all of his evil deeds would show in the face of his portrait instead of mar his young face.
The simularities to the character of Gabriel Gray is striking. My question is can anyone find HARD evidence that the creator of the character Gabriel Gray drew upon this great literary work and in the name paid tribute to Oscar Wilde?

It is definately NOT in relation to Jane Grey. I know this from my research on this question and my knowledge of X-men.
Remember, I would really like a factual answer to this question. Preferably some quote somewhere by the creator of the show or information leading to hard evidence of where he retrieved this name for Sylar's character.

It is most definitely not a coincidence, even if they thought of that name out themselves, writers are working and researching things for MONTHS, and if they know japanese mythology, they probably know about something as famous as dorian gray. its been in the public concionce ever since "League of Extroadinary Gentlemen".

oh, and theres a dorian gray reference in heroes with a painting and sylar. so, there you go.........
referencing isnt that deep. its not rocket science, especially with names.

That's really interesting, but I don't think that the writers of Heroes are that complex. I know the storyline of the show is complex, but they never ever make connections to the current age.

He seems to have more of a relationship to Jean Grey, of the X-Men, particularly when she was Dark Phoenix.
